Madhubani paintings, also known as Mithila art, is an Indian folk art. originated from Mithila region of Bihar and Nepal. It is passed from generation to generation in various families of Mithila region. It is noted for natural colours and unique patterns used in the art. Further, Its colours are connected with love and culture.

ORIGIN:

Madhubani art was first created in the Mithila region. It is associated with the Ramayana yuga. when the wedding of Shri Ram and Mata Sita took place, father of Mata Sita, King Janak asked for the depiction of wedding through arts. Since then the madhubani painting came into existence.

Traditionally used colours in the art : There are some main colours of the art – Black, red, green, white, yellow, blue, and orange.

SOURCES OF NATURAL COLOURS:

Black : Traditionally, the black colour comes from soot and sometimes mixed with a binder like cow dung or natural resin.

Symbolic meaning of using the black colour this way: Black is linked with protection and power, clarity and emphasis. It absorbs negative energy, hence it is often suggested to avoid wearing black in gatherings. It is often seen as the colour of deep spirituality.

Red : Generally, the red colour is derived from the Kusum flowers and Red sandalwood. These are processed and made useful for madhubani art.

Symbolic meaning of using the red colour: Red is the colour of shakti and fertility. It is considered auspicious and divine. Moreover, the red colour shows power and strength. It symbolizes the forces that drives life and destroys evil.

Green : The green colour is made using Bilva or neem leaves. Further, Artists make this by grinding leaves into juice.

Symbolic meaning of using the Green colour: The green colour symbolizes hope, fertility and connection with nature.

White : Rice flour or white clay

Symbolic meaning of using white in art: White is the colour of truth, sacred, purity, and cleanliness. In art, it shows devotion, peace and calmness.

Yellow : The colour is derived from turmeric and mustard. Sometimes the yellow clay is also used.

Symbolic meaning of using Yellow in the art: It is symbol of knowledge, happiness and spiritual energy.

Blue : This colour comes from Indigo plants naturally.

Symbolic meaning of using it: Protection and strength, peace, calmness.

Orange : The colour is from flowers of the Palash trees.

Symbolic meaning of using: The color represents Agni, the Hindu god of fire. This links it to the transformative power of fire, which burns away darkness and purifies impurities.
